1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation
Based on a single attestation, the phonological interpretation of this lexeme is provisional, also because its spelling is quite ambiguous. Only the quality of the root dental appears clear, viz. /had°/ due to the use of 〈tà〉 for /d/ (see Rieken 2008b:642f.), which also suggests a link with /had(a)ra(/i)-/ ‘life’. Alternative interpretations of the spelling include /hadastarram(m)a-/ and /hadastrima-/.
[AH.B.]
1.1.4Meaning
The meaning is suggested on the basis of the assumed link with /had(a)ra(/i)-/ ‘life’, which fits well in the context in BULGARMADEN, §6: a-wa/i REGIO-ni PRAE-i-ha zí-ra/i-la-mi-i (“SCALPRUM.ARGENTUM”)su-ha-pa-na-ti ta-ta-ha á-mi-ti IUSTITIA-na-ti á-mi-ia-ti-ha-a ha-tà-sà-tara/i-ma-ti, approx. /a=wa wattani parihha zirlami suhhappananti tattahha ammidi tarrawannadi ammiyadi=ha hadastrammadi/, meaning ‘I stood over (= ruled) the country, fruitful (and) rich by my loyalty and my vitality (?)’ (cf. Rieken 2003a:50).
The earlier suggested connection of /hadastramma-/ with /hattast(ar)r(i)-/ ‘violence’ (thus Starke 1990a:294, at first cautiously followed by Rieken 2003a:36, subsequently withdrawn in Rieken 2008b:643 upon the investigation of 〈tà〉) is void, because the dentals do not show the same quality.
[AH.B.]
1.1.5Stem
If the interpretation of the phonology of the word is correct, it represents a stem in /-mman-/ (cf. Starke 1990a:294), based on an abstract noun in /-astr(i)-/, which is otherwise unattested in HLuw.
[AH.B.]
