1.1.1Transmission

This word is found in grave inscriptions and in the inscription of the inscribed pillar of Xanthos, dated contextually to shortly after the ascension of Artaxerxes II in 405-404 BCE and stylistically to around 400 BCE (Borchhardt & Eichner 1997-1999a:19f.).

1.1.3Meaning

On contextual grounds, Pedersen 1945a:17 suggests the meaning ‘here’ for ebeli, i.e. ebeli me=sijẽni ‘here lies …’ (followed by Meriggi 1980b:238, Melchert (DLL:12), Eichner 2005a:24 n. 127, Neumann 2007a:48, Neumann 2012a:406, Schürr 2012a:127 n. 13). The morphological comparison with Lyc. A teli ‘where’ adds further confirmation.
