1.1.3Meaning

The word ebeila has been equated to ebei ‘here’ as well as to ebeli and assigned the same semantics (Pedersen 1904a:200, Meriggi 1980b:238, Melchert in DLL:12, Neumann 2007a:47 “here or hither(?)”, Gehrisch 2018a:128). Despite the attractiveness of the comparison, it is necessary to point out that the sentence it occurs in is not entirely clear. Although it refers to a prohibited action pertaining to the grave chamber, it is possible that the word ebeila carries a slightly different meaning (perhaps regarding deixis?) than ebei. More evidence is needed for a more certain interpretation.

[D.S.]

1.1.4Stem

The extension in -la or -ila vis-à-vis ebei ‘here’ is comparable to the Hittite suffix -ila in e.g. ūk ‘I’ → ukila ‘I myself’ (thus implicitly Neumann 2007a:47).
