ñtereze/i-

‘(unknown)’

1.1.1Transmission

This lexeme is attested in the inscription of the inscribed pillar of Xanthos, dated contextually to shortly after the ascension of Artaxerxes II in 405-404 BCE and stylistically to around 400 BCE (Borchhardt & Eichner 1997-1999a:19f.).

dat./loc. sg.(?) ñterez[i?] TL 44a.35 (Xanthos)

1.1.3Graphic Features

Schürr & Dönmez 2015a:135 restore [i], perhaps in order to get a dat./log. sg. agreeing with xubase, which they interpret as dative singular; see under lemma. For the restoration of the context thanks to a join with a newly found piece, see Schürr & Dönmez ibid.; outdated Neumann 2007a:251.

1.1.4Meaning

In an attempt to equate the passage in which ñtereze/i- is found with a passage in the Greek epigram on the same funerary monument, Schürr 2009a:159 suggests the meaning ‘in (his) youth’ for ñterez[i], analyzing the word as a compound made of ñte ‘in, inside’ and ar(i)- ‘time’, which is hardly tenable. Both Melchert (DLL:46) and Schürr 2009a:159 agree at the very least that ñtereze/i- represents a derivative of ñtere/i-, but in the context, it is very likely an adjective modifying xubase, itself of unknown meaning. Pending further evidence, no semantic assignment is given here.

1.1.5Stem

The adjective ñtereze/i- is built with the suffix -(e)ze/i-.
