1.1.1Transmission

This lexeme is attested in the inscription of the inscribed pillar of Xanthos, dated contextually to shortly after the ascension of Artaxerxes II in 405-404 BCE and stylistically to around 400 BCE (Borchhardt & Eichner 1997-1999a:19f.).

1.1.4Meaning

The word occurs in a context describing the architectural work of the inscribed pillar. Schürr & Dönmez 2015a:144 suggests the meaning ‘wrestling (?)’, which is drawn from the content of the Greek epigram. However, this is a poor approach, since the short Greek poem may contain additional information not mentioned in the Lycian version. Therefore, forcing the Greek context onto various passages of the Lycian inscriptions is not commendable. Pending an etymological approach, no meaning is attributed here to xubase.
