3sg. pres. ind. act. hladi TL 111.5 (Limyra)

Melchert (DLL:3) assigns the two attestations of the 3sg. pres. to the lexeme alaha-(di), which is not supported by the overall data.

1.1.3Meaning

The verb hla(i)-(di) occurs in a penalty formula and refers to a “prohibited” action pertaining a grave:

ebei : ẽ{:}kepi : ñtepi sijẽni : hri : hladi=ti me=ttlidij ẽ[n]i : q[lahi eb]ijehi tise tise : prñnawati …’ (TL 111.5)

‘As soon as he (scil. Erzesinube) lies herein, who does hri hladi, he will pay whatever he builds to the mother of the local precinct.’

Judging by the context, hri hladi should refer to the enlargement of a rock-carved tomb for the purpose of placing in more bodies. Neumann 2012a:392f. leaves the verb untranslated, however (outdated Carruba 1978b:170f. ‘to change, violate’). The meaning ‘to increase, expand’ is suggested by Schürr 2005a:150 and Sasseville 2021a:100 on both contextual and comparative grounds. These semantics are compatible with the other meaning ‘to offer in sacrifice’ (see Lyc. B sla-(ti)), which applies to the context of TL 45b.12-13, in which the verb takes wawa ‘cattle’ as direct object. One should also note that the preverb used is not irrelevant. Together with the preverb hri ‘up’, the verb has the meaning ‘to expand’, whereas with the preverb ẽnẽ, it means ‘to offer in sacrifice’.

1.1.4Stem

The singular stem hladi belongs to a denominative verb in -a(i)-(di) and not in -a-(ti) (Sasseville 2021a:98-100). The derivational base is found in the Lycian B compound urasla- and in the Lycian A personal name Hla-.

1.2.1Transmission

This lexeme is attested in the inscription of the inscribed pillar of Xanthos, dated contextually to shortly after the ascension of Artaxerxes II in 405-404 BCE and stylistically to around 400 BCE (Borchhardt & Eichner 1997-1999a:19f.).

1.2.2Forms

3sg. pres. ind. act. sladi TL 44d.63 (Xanthos)

The form sladi has often been attributed to the same lexeme as its non-lenited counterpart sla-(ti) (thus Hajnal 1995a:128, Rieken 2005b:70, Schürr 2018b:79, questioned by Neumann 2007a:326f.), although Melchert (DLL:128) points out that sladi reflects a different denominative suffix. His point of view was defended at length by Sasseville 2015a. It is also treated as belonging to a different verbal stem class in Sasseville 2021a:100.

[D.S.]

1.2.3Meaning

The sole attestation of sladi occurs within a sacrificial context and takes the direct object trm͂milija… qelelija ‘Lycian qelelija’. Since the meaning of the substantive qeleli(je)- is unknown, the suggested semantic interpretation of sladi cannot be entirely verified, although it is expected to have a meaning similar to sla-(ti). Just like sla-(ti), sladi is used with the preverb ẽnẽ. Schürr 2018b:79 translates it with ‘to make great’, which is morphematically correct, although the semantics must have evolved; see Sasseville 2021a:100.

[D.S.]

1.2.4Stem

The form sladi is treated as a denominative verb in -a(i)-(di) (Sasseville 2021a:98-100). The derivational base is found in the compound urasla- and in the Lycian A personal name Hla-.
