nom./acc. pl. n. qelelija TL 44d.63 (Xanthos)

1.1.3Meaning

The word qelelija is modified by trm̃milija ‘Lycian’ and is the direct object of the verb sladi ‘he offers in sacrifice’. Therefore, qelelija refers to something that can be offered to the gods in sacrifice (likewise Meriggi 1938a:148 n. 3). As pointed out by Melchert (DLL:126), qelelija is surely a substantivized adjective in -i(je)-. If qeleli(je)- is etymologically related qelidele/i- ‘of the pen (?)’ and, then, it could refer to the sacrificial animals of an enclosure; cf. under lemma qele(/i)-. This interpretation must remain tentative until further evidence. The suggestion of Shevoroshkin 2014a:242 that qelelija means ‘military’ based on an etymological comparison with Hitt. ḫulle/a-(mi) ‘to fight’ does not shed light on the context.
