1.1.3Meaning
The noun šawkarplos is modified by mλwẽnšiš ‘of the balcony/balustrade (?)’, the head of the relative clause with qiš (cinaλ qiš qiraλ) and is subject of the verb fẽtwinta-(t) (contra Meriggi 1935a:114 and Vetter 1959a:38 “predicate noun”). Therefore, it may represent a functionary active in the necropolis, which would be supported by another compound with šaw- (see šawwasτa-(d)). Differently, Oreshko 2018b:234 suggests that šawkarplos refers to a kind of plot dedicated to a daughter, i.e. tutrlo-, which does not provide a satisfactory analysis of the sentence. Meriggi 1935a:114 n. 109 etymologically connects šawkarplo- with karfto- and suggests the meaning ‘Germ. wohl bewahrend’ for the latter, which is a mere guess and lacks support. In any case, no concrete meaning is assigned here.

1.1.4Stem
The noun karplo- reflects an oxytone noun in -o- c. (Melchert 1994a:370), even though the function of the suffix -lo- is still obscure (pace Meriggi 1935a:114 n. 109). It is generally agreed that we are dealing here with a compound between šaw- (see šawν) and karplo- (Gusmani 1964a:192 with further literature, Sh. Hawkins 2013a:161, Oreshko 2018b:234).
