1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

The phonological interpretation of this noun is reasonably secure, given that it is attested in fully syllabic spelling and belongs to the word family around /harwa-/ ‘road’. Moreover, the morphological structure is fully transparent, cf. the discussion of the stem below. The spelling reflects the sweeping rhotacism by hypercorrectly using 〈lá/í〉 to represent a rhotacized former intervocalic /d/ as the stem-final consonant.

Like the other members of the word family, this word, too, is spelt with the logogram (sign *211), depicting a path.

1.1.4Meaning

The meaning of this noun is deduced from its morphology and finds support in the only context of attestation currently known.Despite an erroneous reading, Hrozný 1933a:181 was already able to draw the etymological link to /harwa-/ ‘road’ and translated the word tentatively as “avait envoyé”. Built with the suffix /-ahid-/, the denotation is likely to be abstract, with ‘travel’ being the most likely, cf. Hawkins 1975a:151. KARKAMIŠ A15b, §21 reads: wa/i-mu-u ta-ni-ma-si-na REGIO-ni-si-i-na-´ INFANS-ni-na (“VIA”)ha+ra/i-wa/i-ta-hi-lá/í-ti-i CUM-na ARHA sa-ta (DOMINUS)na-ni-i-sa á-mi-i-sa “LINGUA”-la-ti SUPER+ra/i-a, approx. /wa=mu tanimassin wattanissin niwarannin harwa(n)tahidadi annan ahha satta nannis ammis lalatti sarra/, meaning ‘My master fully released? to me every child of the region from/by travel concerning language’ (cf. Hawkins 2000a:131 and Yakubovich 2012a:333 with discussion).

1.1.5Stem

This word is a neuter noun, built with the abstract suffix /-ahid-/, see already Hawkins 1975a:151. The derivational base appears to be the noun /harwa(n)t(i)-?/ ‘road’, which is also attested in HLuw.
