1.1.4Meaning

Hajnal (Hajnal 1995a:157 n. 158) interprets killeterblẽ as a compound instead of two separate words, e.g. kille and terblẽ. This makes the syntax easier to account for, since a dative is already expressed in the singular, i.e. ladi ´for the lady´, and a second dative in the plural, i.e. kille ´payment´, would be difficult to account for (pace DLL:118 and Schürr 2005a:143). Based on the context, killeterblẽ is probably an agent noun, since it is coordinated with ziwalã (title) by the conjunctions ne=kene=ke ‘neither… nor...’.

Melchert (DLL:118) suggests to interpret derivationally the first member *kille- ‘payment’ as the nominal base of the denominative verb attested in Lycian A as ttl(e)i-(di) ‘to pay’ (redupl.) and Lyc. B *kll(e)i-. This analysis is supported by the compound Lyc. A tllaxñta- ‘payment standard’ with the first member tlla-. Contextual evidence for the semantics of kille- ‘payment’ is found in the verb kiki-(ti) ‘to cause (sth.) to be paid’ occurring two lines before. The second member of the compound killeterblẽ remains semantically obscure.

For the first member of the compounds see *kille-.
