1.1.3Meaning ‘tribute’

Melchert (DLL:118) suggests the meaning ‘tribute’ based on the morphological analysis: He interprets the Lycian B noun klleime- as a substantivized participle of the verb *kll(e)i-, whose cognate is found in Lyc. A ttl(e)i-(di). (followed by Hajnal 1995a:157 n. 158, contra Meriggi 1938a:150, Shevoroshkin 1969a:264). Contextual evidence in favor of Melchert’s hypothesis can be found in the passage TL 44d.61, where the word klleime is modified by sm̃mẽte ‘having bindings/obligations’ (vel sim.). Thus, the whole phrase can be plausibly translated as ‘binding tributes’ (vel sim.).
