1.1.3Meaning
Shevoroshkin 1977b:138 interprets the word tijala as an agent noun in -ala- c. Pace Melchert (DLL:67), a neuter plural of an adjective in -ele/i- is formally possible, but not supported by the syntax: The substantive tijala should be interpreted as a nominative singular, with which the two following possessive adjectives agree, i.e. ãxrhi and uwehi (thus Sasseville 2014-2015a:111). The meaning of tijala- is uncertain, but the interpretation of Melchert (loc. cit.) as a derivative of tija- ‘penalty’ is very probable, since the context preceding the attestation refers to obligations (sm̃me) and post-war amendments. Based on the identification of the suffix -ala- c. (Sasseville 2014-2015a), the approximate meaning of tijala- would be ‘someone in charge of dealing out the penalty’ or ‘someone receiving the penalty’ (vel sim.).
