1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

The phonological interpretation of this word is secure despite the lack of an overt syllabic spelling. Not only does the repeated use of (sign *378) strongly hint at the verb showing reduplication, also the full cognate CLuw. mammanna-(i) ‘to see, behold’ adduced by Hawkins 1980d:136-138 and Starke 1986a:147 supports the assigned shape. The word belongs to the family around /m(a)na-/ ‘to see, look upon’, in which the logogram is ubiquitous and ties the family together.

[AH.B.]

1.1.4Meaning

The meaning of this verb was assigned by Hawkins 1980d:136-138 based on the cognate links of the word to /m(a)na-/ ‘to see, look upon’, and the context of attestation. As part of a benevolence formula (followed by a curse formula), SULTANHAN, §18 reads: wa/i-ta á-pa-sa-ha á-pa-sa-za sa-na-wa/i-ia-za za-ri+i a-ta LITUUS.LITUUS-na-i, approx. /wa=tta abas=ha abassan=za sannawiyan=za zadi anta mammannai/, meaning ‘(He who fears this god), that one, too, will behold his good(ness?) here’ (cf. Hawkins 2000a:466).

[AH.B.]

1.1.5Stem

The verb shows reduplication in the root and assimilation of */ma-mna-/ to the attested /mamma-/ and further suffixation with /-anna-(i)/, cf. already Hawkins 1980d:138 and see Melchert 1988b:218-220 and Sasseville 2021a:303, 514f.

1.2.4Meaning

Once Starke 1980a:143-145 was able to elucidate the meaning of the simplex manā-(di), it was clear that the reduplicated stem mammanna-(i) would belong into the same semantic area (ibid. 145f.). Starke 1980a finds support for this in a mythological passage (Dutu-wa-az Dkam-ru-še-pa-i da-u!-e-ia-an ma-am-ma-[an-na-at-ta] za-a-ni-wa ku-wa-ti “the Sun-god loo[ked] towards Kamrušepa (saying): ‘Why is this?!’”; KUB 35.107 iii 8’, most recently Steitler 2019a:392f.) and the context of the gloss-wedge-marked match in Hittite transmission (see under Lemma). His semantic assignment was accepted by Carruba 1986b:117f., CHD L-N:138, Melchert 1988b:219, CLL:134, Rieken 1999a:57, EDHIL:551, Frotscher 2012a:151, Dempsey 2015a:256, Sasseville 2021a:514f.; hesitant HHw:99, HEG L-N:112-114; unclear HED M:139.Without translation Otten 1953a:87f.; outdated DLL:67, HW:329, Čop 1970a:89, Oettinger 1979a:486.Oettinger 1998b:453f. points out that the reduplication conveys the impression of the pupillary light reflex (“Glanz der Augen”), but a durative notion seems equally possible.

[E.R.]

1.2.5Stem

That a relationship exists between the simplex manā-(di) and its reduplicated derivative mammanna-(i) was first argued by Rosenkranz 1952a:78 and has never been disputed; see also Čop 1961b:59-61, DLL:67f., Starke 1980a:145-147, Melchert 1994a:156, id. 1988b:219, Rieken 1999a:57, EDHIL:551, Frotscher 2012a:151, Dempsey 2015a:227, Sasseville 2021a:302f.; implicit CHD L-N:161, HEG L-N:117, HHw:99. However, Melchert 1988b:220 pointed out that, on account of the geminate nasal, -anna- cannot continue the final part of the reduplicated root (*-on- in alleged *me-mon- after Oettinger 1979a:486), but must be an instance of the imperfective suffix -anna-(i) (accepted by Rieken 1999a:57, Dempsey 2015a:227, Sasseville 2021a:302f.; undecided Bader 1980a:32 n. 52).

[E.R.]

1.3.4Meaning

Besides the simplex manā-(di) ‘to see, experience’ and the Cuneiform Luwian verb mammanna-(i) ‘to see, to look upon with favor’, the gloss-wedge-marked attestations in Hittite transmission also contributed to the semantic interpretation of the verb, excluding the earlier translation as ‘to say’ (for references, see under CLuw. mammanna-(i)) and, thus, confirming Starke’s (Starke 1980a:143-145) hypothesis. The relevant passage runs as follows: (28’)... nu-kán zi-ik ki-aš Dutu-uš (29’)gam-ra-aš-ša dingirMEŠ ke-e-da-a-aš tar-pa-al-li〈〈-uš〉〉 (30’)ar-kam-mi-ia Glossenkeilma-ma-an-na-tén “You, Sun-goddess of the Earth, and (you), infernal deities, look upon this substitute and tribute with favor!” (KUB 24.12 ii 28f., similar iii 4’f.; cf. also CHD L-N:138).

[E.R.]

1.3.6Origin

The exact match with CLuw. mammanna-(i) and the use of the gloss-wedges indicate the Luwian borrowing clearly; cf. the entries in the handbooks (HW:140, DLL:67, CLL:134, HEG L-N:112-114, CHD L-N:138f., HHw:99, Ünal 2007a:422, EDHIL:551), as well as Melchert 2005a:452, van den Hout 2006a:244; also Rosenkranz 1952a:78 and HW:140, still with an erroneous semantic interpretation).
