3sg. pret. act. ti-wa-ta-ni-ia-at-ta KUB 9.6 i 23 (CTH 759, LNS)
  ti-wa-ta-ni-[ia-at-ta] KBo 22.254 rev. 9’ (CTH 762, NS)
part. abl./instr. ti-wa-ta-ni-⸢ia⸣-am-ma-ti KUB 35.58 ii 3’ (CTH 759, NS)

For the analysis of ti-wa-ta-ni-ia-am-ma-ti at KUB 35.58 ii 3’ as a participle, see Otten 1953a:95 (followed in CLL:230 and Sasseville 2021a:32). In contrast, Starke 1990a:254 thinks of a neuter noun in -m(ma)n-, tiwataniyam(ma)n-, which cannot be entirely excluded. – For alleged tiwataniaḫḫa (thus read in CLL:230, Yoshida 2012a:346 n. 7), see under the Lemma tiwatani-(ti). – The putative occurrence at KUB 32.79, 6’ (...-t]i) is less than assured. – The incomplete words ti-wa-t[a- at KUB 32.70 r. col. 6’ and ti-wa-ta-n[i- at KBo 43.295, 4’ are certainly derivatives of DTiwat-, but it is unclear in which way.

1.1.4Meaning ‘to call Tiwat (the Sun-god) as witness, swear, curse’

Until recently, the stems tiwataniya-(ti) and tiwatani-(ti) were not distinguished, with the semantic elucidation always applying to both, and even after their separation into different paradigms (see Sasseville 2021a:128f.), they remain semantically indiscernible.

Based on the asyndetic coordination with ḫirutaniya-(ti) ‘to pronounce an oath, to curse’, Watkins 1993a: 470 concluded that tiwataniya-(ti) belongs to the same semantic field. Adducing the parallel of Osc. deiua- ‘to swear’ (derived form the word for ‘god’), he posited a denominative verb derived from Tiwat- ‘Sun-god’ with the meaning ‘to swear’ (with reference to Laroche’s (DLL:128) literal, but pragmatically insufficient translation ‘ensoleiller’; see also Laroche 1955a:81: ‘celui qui est sous l’action de soleil’ for the participle, followed in HW:386). Watkins 1993a’s proposal was widely accepted (CLL:230, Hutter 2003a:226, Hutter 2007a:722, Yoshida 2012a:346, Rieken 2017e:242f., Sasseville 2020c:278 and Sasseville 2021a:32, 129, 151; still without translation Otten 1953a:95, Starke 1990a:147, HHw:178 and HEG T:398f.; outdated Meriggi 1957b:58: ‘perpetrato’).

1.1.5Stem

On account of their consistent preservation of stem final -iya- (including the participle), Sasseville 2020c:278 (and Sasseville 2021a:32, 129, 151, followed in DCL:s.v.) argues cogently that the relevant forms attest to a factitive verb tiwataniya-(ti) derived from the noun tiwataniya- c. ‘swearing, cursing’, which regarding its stem formation, contrasts with tiwatani-(ti); for further analysis, see under Lemma of tiwatani-(ti).
