1.1.2Forms

nom. sg. ti-wa-ta-ni-ia-ma-aš KBo 31.6 iii 9’ (CTH 277, NS)
gen. sg. [t]i-wa-ta-ni-ia-ma-aš KBo 31.96 i 9’ (CTH 458, NS)

Contra Fuscagni 2014e, who reads ⸢nu-wa ta-ni-ia-ma-aš, the occurrence of tiwataniyamaš is more likely in view of the genitives ēšḫanaš ḫurtiyaš ‘of blood (and) curse’ in the preceding line.

1.1.4Meaning

The analysis of the suffix chain with suffix -m(i)- (transferred to -mi- and -ma- in Hittite) attached to tiwatani-(ti) ‘to swear, curse’ implies a meaning ‘swearing, cursing’ also for the derivative tiwataniyama-. Support comes from the context in both fragments, viz. ēšḫanaš ḫurtiyaš ‘of blood (and) curse’ at KBo 31.96 i 8’ and arraḫḫaniyamaš ‘ranting, cursing’ at KBo 31.6 iii 9; cf. (8’)[x tup-p]u inim mmaš-ḫu-u-i-lu-wa ma-an-kán un-ši tuku?-aš eme-aš na-aš-ma e-eš-ḫar (9’)[na?-aš?-]ma ar-ra-aḫ-ḫa-ni-ia-ma-aš ti-wa-ta-ni-ia-ma-aš a-ri (10’)[na-a]n ki-iš-ša-an a-ni-ia-am-mi “[… table]t of the word of Mašḫuiluwa. If to a human the tongue of wrath? or (a) blood(y deed), [o]r? if ranting (and) cursing (tiwantaniyama-) comes, [then] I treat [hi]m in the following way” (KBo 31.6 iii 8’-10’, Dardano 2006a:182f.).

1.1.5Stem

A derivation with the suffix -m(i)- (on which see Melchert 2003b:195), adapted as -ma- in tiwataniyama-, is assumed by Rieken 2017e:249, contra Starke 1990a:254, who posits a stem built with the -m(ma)n- suffix. His view is followed by HEG T:399 and Hutter 2003a:226. However, the spelling with a singleton -m- speaks for -m(i)-.

1.1.6Origin

The scholars mentioning tiwataniyama- agree that it was borrowed from Luwian (Starke 1990a:254, HEG T:399, Dardano 2006a:185, Rieken 2017e:249; implicit Hutter 2003a:226). The same is assumed here, since it obviously derives from tiwataniya-(ti).
