The interpretation of the abl./instr. forms as (substantivized) participles goes back to Rosenkranz 1952a:87. It is accepted by Otten 1953a:95, Laroche 1955a:81, Meriggi 1957b:57, DLL:45, CLL:69, HHw:50, though not by Starke 1990a:254, who instead posits a neuter abstract noun in ḫīrūtaniyam(ma)n-. Actually, the form is ambiguous, and the semantics of the abstract noun and the substantivized participle are very close to each other.

1.1.3Meaning
Being an obvious derivative of ḫīrūn/t- ‘(false) oath’ and collocated with tiwataniya-(ti) ‘to swear, curse (with the Sun-god as a witness)’, the semantic elucidation of ḫīrūn/t- immediately led to that of ḫīrūtaniya-(ti) ‘to swear, to commit perjury’ (since Laroche 1955a: 81; see also Meriggi 1957b:57, DLL:45, Starke 1990a:573, CLL:69, HHw:50, HW:384, HW 2nd ed. Ḫ:612, Rieken 2017e:241; still without translation Rosenkranz 1952a:87 and Otten 1953a:95).

1.1.4Stem
As pointed out in Sasseville 2021a:148f., the unlenited endings after the stem consistently ending in -iya- (without syncope) indicate a factitive verb in -iya-(ti), which must be derived from an abstract noun *ḫīrūtaniya- c. ‘oath, perjury’ to be reconstructed. Also, the underlying verb *ḫīrūtani-(ti) is still unattested. Regarding the suffix denominative -ani-(ti), Starke 1990a:147 (cf. also Otten 1953a:95, Meriggi 1957b:57, Oettinger 1979a:494) suggested a negative meaning, and Rieken 2017e:244f. even assumed a use restricted to verba dicendi with a negative meaning. However, Sasseville argues that there are counterexamples and the previous impressions resulted from the limited range of the corpus, which may be correct.
