gen. adj. nom. sg. c. ddewezehị TL 65.24 (Isinda)
gen. adj. loc. sg. (?) ddeẉe[zehi(?)] TL 65.19-20 (Isinda)

1.1.3Graphic Features

Neumann 2007a:40f. reconstructs ddeẉe[zije] (TL 65.19-20) instead, which is also possible and would imply a different lexeme. The present restoration follows DLL:10, but it should be considered provisional.

1.1.4Meaning

The genitival adjective ddewezehe/i- modifies the word for the local precinct, which opens a few possibilities, i.e. it refers to a place name (thus Neumann 2007a:40f., Schürr 2016d:157 and probably Gehrisch 2018a:117), a deity (thus Neumann 1979b:260f., Lebrun 1999a:48f.) or it simply characterizes the precinct. The adjective -(e)ze/i- is often used for to derive place names, though not exclusively, e.g. prn͂nezi(je)- ‘household member’, and therefore it cannot be used as evidence for the elucidation of the semantics of ddeweze(/i)-. Moreover, it could be a derivative in -eze- c. instead, see under Stem. It may be ultimately related to ddewe- ‘gift’, although this does not shed immediate light on the semantics of ddewezehi. Yakubovich (pers. comm.) suggests the meaning ‘lying opposite’ (i.e. of the local precinct lying opposite) based on his interpretation of ddewẽ as a variant of n͂tewẽ ‘in face of, opposite’, which is not followed here (cf. under lemma). Pending further evidence, no semantics are attributed to ddeweze(/i)-.

1.1.5Stem

The genitival adjective ddewezehi could have as derivational base a suffix -eze/i-, -eze- c. (thus Hajnal 1995a:68), or less likely -aza- c. (thus tentatively DLL:10). For the suffix -eze- c., see Sasseville 2021a:206-208.
