1.1 Hieroglyphic Luwian

/ziladuwa/, zi/a-la-tu-wa/i

‘thereupon’

1.1.1Transmission

The sole attestation of this hapax legomenon can be found on an altar inscription from Boğazköy, dating to the second half of the 13th century BCE.

1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

The phonological interpretation of this word should be viewed as secure. Not only is its sole attestation spelt fully syllabically, but it is also found in Hittite /ziladuwa/, probably as a loanword from Luwian and sometimes marked with Glossenkeilen (HEG W-Z:720-724).

[AH.B.]

1.1.4Meaning

The much more numerous attestations of this word in Hittite (sometimes with Glossenkeilen, often without) allow for a more detailed assessment than the single occurrence in HLuw. Still, the HLuw. context of attestation for the word is quite clear and indicates that /ziladuwa/ marks the passage of time, by metaphoric transference from spatial distance, and the semantic interpretation can therefore be assumed to be reasonably secure, cf. Rieken 2019b.

[AH.B.]

1.1.5Stem

The lexeme is derived from the adverb /zila/ ‘then’, juxtaposed to the adverb /duwa/ ‘far away’ (Rieken 2019b:315).

1.2 Luwian (Glossenkeilwörter)

doppelter Glossenkeilziladuwa

‘in future’

1.2.1Transmission

The ca. 35-40 attestations of the ziladuwa are strewn over a wide range of genres including incantation rituals, oracles, letters, protocols, oaths, instructions, treaties and the Apology of Ḫattušili III. The earliest instance comes from a MS instruction.

1.2.3Graphic Features

Checked against the photographs in the Konkordanz. – The word appears in the same spelling throughout, with or without gloss wedge. Most cases of the use with gloss wedge are found in the Apology of Ḫattušili III., though not consistently there, and two more in an oracle and an incantation ritual. – The gloss wedge in KUB 32.133 i 7 has been inserted secondarily after erasur of an intended initial zi-. – The reading of the important MS attestation is assured in spite of the damage of the signs -˹la˺- and -w[a].

1.2.4Meaning

The meaning of doppelter Glossenkeilziladuwa was recognized by Sommer 1922a:56-60, together with the one of its homonym Glossenkeilzilatiya. The two are used in the same texts without any discernible semantic differentiation, but in terms of pragmatics, we observe that the use of doppelter Glossenkeilziladuwa starts earlier and is more widespread (see under Transmission). This comes as a surprise, considering the fact that the gloss wedge is more frequently used for doppelter Glossenkeilziladuwa than for Glossenkeilzilatiya.

[E.R.]

1.2.5Origin

Based on the occurrence of /ziladuwa/ in Hieroglyphic-Luwian and the use of the gloss wedge, it is generally assumed that the lexeme is a loan from Luwian into Hittite (Sommer 1932a:51, Laroche 1959a:115, CLL:283, Weitenberg 1984a:296, Hawkins 1975a:129: “Hitt./Luw. ziladuwa”; unclear: HEG W-Z:723). For its morphological analysis as a univerbation of zīla and duwa see Rieken 2019b:315 (contra Čop 1956a:35 amd Weitenberg 1984a:296f.).
