1.1 Cuneiform Luwian

zilan

‘behind, afterwards, thereupon (?)’

1.1.1Transmission

This word is found in fragmentary passages.

1.1.2Forms

indecl. zi-la-a[n KUB 35.91, 2’ (CTH 767, MS?)
  ˹zi-i-la-am˺[- KUB 35.60 iii 3 (CTH 763, NS)

The assignment of ˹zi-i-la-am˺[- in KUB 35.60 iii 3 to this lemma is only tentative. It is suggested under the assumption that the final nasal of zilan was assimilated to a following sentence connective -pa, which, however, would be broken off. – It is also not assured that zi-la-a[n in KUB 35.91, 2’ really ends after -an. Thus, there is caveat regarding the establishment of the lemma as such.

1.1.4Meaning

Due to the fragmentation of the tablets, the meaning assignment is entirely dependent on the attestations of CLuw. zilan in Hittite transmission and has to be regarded as provisional.

doppelter Glossenkeilzēlan (zilan)

1.2.1Transmission

The majority of attestations comes from oracle texts, but the word is also found once in a prayer and once in a ritual fragment. All manuscripts feature NS.

Contra HEG W-Z:716, the form zilan in KUB 5.1 does not display a neuter by-form of zilaš, nor is the graphically shortened adverb zi-la.-an ‘on this side’, as maintained in Ünal 1974a:177,  but is an adverb zilan ‘behind, afterwards, thereupon’, see below under Meaning. – Bo 5591 based on old transliteration. – Attibution of zi-la-an in KBo 40.291, 3’ and KUB 22.50, 3’ unclear; alternatively acc. sg. of zila- c. possible.

1.2.3.1Phonological Interpretation

While the phonological shape /tsilan/ applies to most attestations, the single exception in KUB 54.1 i 35 (Glossenkeilzēlan) is probably due to an etymological adaptation to the Hittite word family of zē- ‘to be cooked (to the end)’.

[E.R.]

1.2.4Meaning

With the exception of Archi & Klengel 1980a:58, 62, an adverb zilan is assumed for neither Luwian nor Hittite. Usually, the attestations are attributed to zilawan ‘on this side’ and its graphic short forms (e.g. Ünal 1974a:177, probably also in Ünal 2007a:821). However, an adverb more or less identical in meaning with CLuw. zīla ‘subsequently, afterwards, thereupon’, i.e. a form enlarged by -(a)n (see under Stem), would fit the contexts perfectly well, as seen in KUB 54.1 i 34–36 (slightly differently Archi & Klengel 1980a:58, 62: ‘endlich’):

mān=wa kāš [a]ntuḫšaš aki=ya ammel=ma=wa di-šar Dutu an-e doppelter Glossenkeilzēlan punušdu

‘Even if this person (scil. my enemy) dies, the Sun-god of Heaven shall pursue my lawsuit (even) afterwards (i.e. posthumously).’

Cf. also KUB 5.1 iv 83–4 and ibid. i 11:

Dutu-ši=za dingir.meš-tar ša ḪUR.SAGḪaḫarwa kaskal-aḫzi zilann=a=kan ša URUḫatti dingir.meš-tar kaskal-aḫzi ‘The majesty will bring the statues of the gods of the Ḫaḫarwa-mountains on their way. And subsequently, he will bring the statues of the gods of the Ḫatti on their way.’

inim URUtaptena inim URUḫuršama=ya ul -anzi dingir.meš=za=kan zilan apāt malān sig5-ru ‘They do not deal with the affair of Taptena and the affair of Ḫuršama. (If) this approved by the gods, (the exta) shall be positive.’

An oracle question similar in content to KUB 5.1 i 11 is phrased in KUB 22.57 obv. 17’: dingir-lum apezza zi-an warši[y]aši ‘(if) by that you, God, calm down with regard to your heart’. The meaning of zilan assigned here is further confirmed by the list of positions of billy goats in Bo 5591 obv. 22’ 1 máš.gal zilan 1 máš.gal pariya[an 1 máš.ga]l zag-za 1 máš.gal gùb-[za] parallel to the list in IBoT 3.148 iv 6f. 4 máš.gal … 1-en egir-an 1-en pariyan 1-en zag-az 1-en gùb-az. Obviously, the spatial meaning ‘behind’ was still kept beside the temporal one.

[E.R.]

1.2.5Stem

The shape of the adverb with final -(a)n, zilan, is related to Luw. zīla ‘thereupon’ in the same way as andan is to anda (for which see Boroday & Yakubovich 2018a:15f.).

[E.R.]

1.2.6Origin

The combination of gloss wedge and adaptation to Hittite phonology in the single occurrence Glossenkeilzēlan shows that the scribe was well aware of the Luwian origin of the word. All members of the word family in Luwian show -i-/-ī- as root vowel, while Hittite features -ē- and -∅-; Hitt. zinne/a- was probably no longer felt as belonging here.
