1.1.3Graphic Features

Checked against the photographs in the Konkordanz. – The full spelling zi-la-wa-an occurs with a single exception only in the MS tablets, while the abbreviated form zi.-an is typical of the texts of the NH period. The use of zi. is rare. The spelling zi-la.-an only occurs in KUB 22.51 (for adverb zilan).

1.1.4Meaning

Within the bird oracle reports, the movement of the birds is described by combinations of directional adverbs. One contrastive pair is pariyawan and zilawan. Like pariyan, pariyawan is normally understood as ‘across, on the other side’ and therefore, its counterpart zilawan has been interpreted as ‘on this side’ (Götze 1957a:150, Archi 1975a:172f., Ünal 1973a:37, 42f., HW:261, HHw:208, HEG W-Z:724-726). Ünal 2007a:821 suggests ‘next, following’, while Beal 2002a:66-68 prefers not to translate the word.Implausible Haas 2008a:32: ‘on the other side’ as opposed to zilan ‘on this side’. More recently, Sakuma 2009a:111 suggested that zilawan means ‘longitudinally’ (Germ. ‘längs’) in contrast to pariya(wa)n ‘across’. A connection with zilan ‘behind’ is imaginable, if a meaning ‘towards the end along a (certain) line’ is meant, but this is speculative.

1.1.5Origin

While cumulative evidence has been forwarded to suggest Luwian origin for zila- and other members of the word family, this is difficult in the case of zilawan. The only arguments could be the form of the root zi- (vs. Hitt. zē-) and the frequency of Luwian terms in the technical language of bird oracle reports. This may not be enough to convince most scholars.
