1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation
The phonological interpretation of this word is tentative, although its belonging to the word family around /hartu-/ ‘descendant, clan’ is not in doubt, just like its close links to CLuw. ḫartuwatt(i)- ‘descendance’ (CLL:61) and related words as well as Hittite ḫartu- ‘offspring, descendance’ (HED Ḫ:202). While a stem /hartuwi(ya)-/ is the most likely option, cf. the discussion of the stem below, other stem shapes are possible, too, based on the attested spelling, e.g. /hartuwid-/.
[AH.B.]
1.1.4Meaning
The meaning is inferred from the connection with /hartu-/ ‘descendant, clan’ and the contexts of attestation, which show the word to be a neuter and therefore more likely to have an abstract meaning instead of referring to actual human entities. Thus, ASSUR letter c, §7 reads, possibly in the form of an angry rhetorical question: wa/i-mu-ta *187-tu-wa/i-i-za kwa/i-za u-si-ti-sà, approx. /wa=mu=tta hartuwin=za kwanza usittis/, probably meaning ‘(Again, you supply me with nothing,) while you supply me with kin?’, followed by a demand for items to be sent (cf. Hawkins 2000a:535), arguably for feeding the additional mouths.
[AH.B.]
1.1.5Stem
The contexts of attestation show that the word is a neuter gender noun. If the phonological interpretation given here should be correct, it is most likely a substantivization of the neuter forms of the adjective /hartuwi(ya)-/ ‘dear, beloved (?)’.
