1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation
The phonological interpretation of this adjective follows that of its derivational base /hartu-/ ‘descendant, clan’, and the word family finds further support in the cognates around CLuw. ḫartuwatt(i)- ‘descendance’ (CLL:61) and Hittite ḫartu- ‘offspring, descendance’ (HED Ḫ:202). The glide /w/ represents an epenthesis between the nominal stem-final /-u-/ and the suffix /-i(ya)-/.
[AH.B.]
1.1.4Meaning
The meaning of this word is inferred from its link with /hartu-/ ‘descendant, clan’ and its contexts of attestation, but the semantic assignment remains tentative. In EREĞLİ 2, §2, the most likely interpretation sees /hartuwi(ya)-/ as a postposed modifier to /taskwar(i)-/ ‘earth’, with which it formally agrees: “˹(TERRA)˺”ta-sà-kwa/i+ra/i-sa-pa-wa/i+ra/i “*187”-tu-wa/i-i-sá INFRA-na-na i-zi-ia+ra/i, approx. /taskwaris=ba=wa=di hartuwis annan izziyadi/, meaning ‘(The … sky is made above,) but the dear earth is made below’ (cf. Poetto 2002a:398f.).
[AH.B.]
1.1.5Stem
The present word is an adjective (pace Poetto 2002a:399) in /-i(ya)-/ derived from the noun /hartu-/ ‘descendant, clan’.
