1.1.2Forms

acc. sg. c. /tuwarisin/ (VITIS)tu-wa/i+ra/i-si-na BOR, §4 (Tabal)

At BOR, §4, the attested 〈(VITIS)tu-wa/i+ra/i-si-na〉 is assumed to be complete as is. Earlier, scholars have assumed it to be missing a 〈-sà-〉, i.e. 〈(VITIS)tu-wa/i+ra/i〈-sà〉-si-na〉 (see e.g. Hawkins 2000a:520), since that would conform to the also attested possessive adjective /tuwarisassa/i-/, see at HLuw. /tuwaris(a)-/ ‘vineyard’. However, the suffixes /-assa/i-/ and /-i(ya)-/ are both used to form adjectives of appurtenance, and while most nouns are associated with either one or the other for their corresponding adjectives, a small number of nouns are attested with both. The present word may easily belong to that small group and is hence entered here as a separate lexeme, instead of assuming it to represent a deficient spelling.

1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

The phonological interpretation of this word relies on that of its derivational base /tuwaris(a)-/ ‘vineyard’, see the discussion there. The suffix assumed to be present, /-i(ya)-/, is well-known from many other formations; it undergoes i-mutation, resulting in the affected cases showing contraction of /-iyi-/ to /-i-/ as in the acc. sg. c. attested at BOR, §4.

1.1.4Meaning

The meaning of the word has been clear for a long time for its obvious relation with /tuwaris(a)-/ ‘vineyeard’, even though it is attested but once and in a partly fragmented context. BOR, §4 runs: za-ha-wa/i-a (VITIS)tu-wa/i+ra/i-si-na (DEUS)TONITRUS-hu-za-na […], approx. /zan=ha=wa tuwarisin Tarhunzan …/, meaning ‘(I myself planted this vineyard,) and … this (storm-god) Tarhunza of the Vineyard’ with the lacuna probably having contained a 1sg. pret. ind. act. word meaning ‘I set up’ vel sim. (cf. Hawkins 2000a:520).

1.1.5Stem

If the interpretation as an adjective of appurtenance is correct, the present lexeme is derived with the suffix /-i(ya)-/ from the also attested noun HLuw. /tuwaris(a)-/ ‘vineyard’, cf. e.g. Melchert 2003b:197.
