1.1 Cuneiform Luwian
malḫaššalla/i-
‘pertaining to the ritual (offerings)’1.1.1Transmission
This lexeme is found once in an incantation belonging to the festival for the pantheon of Ištanuwa (CTH 772) and probably once in a ritual from the Tauriša tradition.

1.1.2Forms
| nom./acc. pl. n. | ma-al-ḫa-〈aš〉-šal-la | KBo 4.11 obv. 28 | (CTH 772, NS) |
| unknown | [ma-a]l?-ḫa-aš-š[al-l]i-[ | KBo 29.29 obv. 1’ | (CTH 765, MS?) |
1.1.3Graphic Features
Checked against the photographs in the Konkordanz (Mainzer Fotoarchiv). The attestation of KBo 29.29 listed in the table here was left untransliterated by Starke 1985b:257 and can thus be considered a new attestation.
[D.S.]
1.1.4Meaning
The meaning has already been deduced on morphological grounds, i.e. with the adjectival suffix -alla/i-; cf. Laroche 1959a:66 “magique, magicien”, Starke 1990a:172 “das (magische) Ritual betreffend”, Melchert (CLL:132) “pertaining to ritual magic (vel sim.)”. The context of KBo 29.29 is too fragmentary to be of any help, whereas the other occurrence makes it clear that the word is related to offerings given to the gods… ta-ru-pí-ia-al-la aš-ta pí-u-un-ni [ … ]x ma-al-ḫa-aš-šal-la KI.MIN “we give penance (?) pertaining to the tarupiya. We give penance (?) pertaining to the ritual (offerings).

1.2 Luwian in Hittite transmission
malḫaššalla/i-
‘pertaining to the ritual (offerings)’1.2.1Transmission
This lexeme is found in an oracle fragment (CTH 582).

1.2.2Forms
| nom./acc. pl. n. | [m]a-al-˹ḫa-aš-ša˺-al-l[a] | KBo 58.91, 8’ | (CTH 582, NS) |
I owe the attestation of KBo 58.91 to Melchert pers. comm. Despite the text being an oracle and thus an unexpected source, it is very tempting to see lines 7’-9’ of KBo 58.91 as Luwian; cf. in line 7’ GIŠ-ru-wa-aš-š[a(-) with Luw. GIŠta-a-ru-w[a?(-) (KBo 29.6 iv 12’), although Hitt. GIŠ-ru-wa-aš-š=a would be formally possible.

1.2.3Meaning
The meaning cannot be recovered from the context but is assigned based on the equivalent CLuw. malḫaššalla/i- (see above), which also guarantees its Luwian origin.
[D.S.]
For the lemma head see CLuw. *malḫa-.
