1.1.2Forms

2sg. impv. act. doppelter Glossenkeilú-pa-aš-ša-al-la-i KBo 18.24 i 11 (CTH 187, NS)
  ú-pašx-šal-li VSNF 12.106 ii 14’ (CTH 209, NS)

Hagenbuchner 1989a:242-244 seems to consider for doppelter Glossenkeilú-pa-aš-ša-al-la-i at KBo 18.24 i 11 both a 3sg. pres. ind. and a 2sg. impv. act. (untranslated), but in the end, opts for the latter analysis, which is demanded by the context (see also HEG U:79).

1.1.4Meaning

The lexeme remains untranslated in the text editions (Heinhold-Krahmer 1988a:100, Hagenbuchner 1989a:242, 244, Mora & Giorgieri 2004a:91f.), whereas HEG U:79 and DCL:s.v. suggest ‘to respect, pay attention to’ (vel sim.). The second meaning makes perfect sense in the given context: (9)kinun=ma=ta inimḪI.A kue ḫatrānun (10)nu=za lugal.gal kuit ul=za 2-an taparanza (11)n=at=za=kan doppelter Glossenkeilupaššallai n=at sig5-in (12)išdamaš “The words I wrote to you – since I am a Great King, not a ruler of second rank – pay attention to them (scil. the words) and listen well to them!” (cf. HEG U:79). Inasmuch the syntax of the infinitive construction at VSNF 12.106 ii 14’ is understood, ‘to pay attention to’ as an order by the author of the letter to its addressee seems fitting.

1.1.5Stem

If the verb belongs to the Hittite class of denominative verbs -ā(i)-(mi) (CLuw. -ā(i)-(di)), it is based on an adjective in -alla/i- ‘attentive’, which in turn derives from a stem in -ašša- c. ‘dedicated person’, individualizing formation of an adjective in -ašša/i- ‘related to dedication’ (for the sequence of suffixes, cf. DIyašalla- (divine name), parlašalla- ‘(a functionary)’, lilaššalla/i- ‘related to reconciliation’, and malḫaššalla/i- ‘pertaining to the ritual (offerings)’).

1.1.6Origin

A Luwian origin is assumed in accordance with the gloss wedge marking and the Luwian suffixes by Melchert 2005a:451 (DCL:s.v.) and van den Hout 2006a:240.
