1.1.2Forms

stem form li-la-aš-ša-al-la KUB 53.21 rev. 9’ (CTH 529, NS)

Formally, lilaššalla must be a stem form in pseudo-Akkadographic spelling (contra EDHIL:523 and DCL:s.v.), since it does not show grammatical agreement with NA4zi.kin, which represents the nom. sg. c. ḫuwašiš ‘cult stele’.

1.1.4Meaning

The adjective modifies NA4zi.kin = ḫuwaši- c. ‘cult stele’. It occurs in the immediate context of the lila-festival in Nerik, which removes any potential doubt about the connection of lilaššalla with līla- ‘pacification, soothing’ (contra HEG L-N:57). Its transparent stem formation lila- + -ašša- c. + adjectival -alla/i- permits a translation as ‘related to the pacification ritual’ (cf. malḫaššalla/i- ‘pertaining to the ritual (offerings)’ and other derivatives featuring this suffix combination; see Rieken forthcoming, modifying Puhvel HED L:79).

1.1.6Origin

On account of its stem formation, the adjective can be regarded as Luwian (see already HED L:79, DCL:s.v., Rieken forthcoming).
