1.1.2Forms

nom./acc. pl. or coll. (?) a-ru-ú-na KUB 35.132, 5’ (CTH 771, NS)

The word has been tentatively interpreted as an imperative form of the verb arunā(i)-(di) (Laroche 1959a:32, CLL:32), which is not supported by the structure of the clause nor by its plene spelling. The nominal interpretation is suggested by Sasseville 2021a:83, who recognizes that it is modified by the adjective tarwaiya.

1.1.4Meaning

Sasseville 2021a:83 takes the nominal form arūna as the derivational base of the two denominatives āruna- ‘to make great, rear’ and arunā(i)-(di) ‘to raise (?), cultivate crops’. Melchert (apud Sasseville 2021a:83 n. 4) suggests that arūna tarwaiya means ‘woody heights (?)’. Outdated is Meriggi 1957a:201 n. 22. Melchert’s suggestion is possible, but difficult to prove due to the obscurity of the context.

1.1.5Stem

Formally, arūna can be taken as a neuter plural or as a collective form of a common gender noun in -a-. Based on the two denominative verbs, the latter seems more likely (see Sasseville 2015a and the conclusions in Sasseville 2021a:98), although more data would be welcome.

2. Reconstruction

2.1Reconstruction ‘rising, heights’

Comparing CLuw. arūna- (a-ru-ú-na) and Hitt. aruna- (cf. once with 〈ú〉 in the dat. sg. a-ru-ú-ni), we obtain a Proto-Anatolian formation *oruneh2- ←  *h3runeh2- (to *h3er- ‘to rise’; HEG A:71-73, EDHIL:212f., Sasseville 2021a:84 n. 5 and see PAnat. *h3ór-/h3r-´ ‘to arise’ for the loss of the laryngeal) with semantics pertaining to heights. The formation -una- in Hittite has been attributed to a deverbal *u̯er/n- suffix (see Rieken 1999a:354 with further literature) or to a suffix chain *-u-no- on account of aru-/-aw- ‘high’ (cf. EDHIL:212f., Rieken 2009b:152, but *-u-neh2- in Sasseville 2021a:84 n. 5).
