1.1.2Forms
| dat./loc. sg. | /ariya/ | PUGNUS-ri+i-i-ia | KARKAMIŠ A15b, §2 (Karkamiš) |
/ariya/ in KARKAMIŠ A15b, §2 is analysed here as a noun, see discussion of stem below. In the clause, the word is followed by the connective particle 〈-ha〉, i.e. /=ha/ ‘and’.

1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation
The phonological interpretation of the present lexeme is reasonably certain because the spelling links the attested form to the verb /ari-(ti)/ ‘to raise’ (but see discussion of stem below), for which there is considerably more textual evidence.
[AH.B.]
1.1.4Meaning
Use of the logogram PUGNUS (*39) is restricted to but a small number of lexemes in the HLuw. corpus, viz. the verbs /ari-(ti)/ ‘to raise, to rise’ and /allummi-/ ‘to strengthen’ and their respective word families; the further syllabic signs tie the present lexeme to the former verb. It is therefore highly likely that its meaning should be sought in the same semantic realm, which leads Sasseville 2021a:22 to suggest ‘exultation’.
[AH.B.]
1.1.5Stem
Following a suggestion by Hawkins 2000a:131f., Sasseville 2021a:21f. n. 5 views /ariya/ as the dat./loc. sg. of a noun. The word would be derived from /ari-(ti)/ ‘to raise, to rise’ and would act as the derivational base of a factitive verb /ariya-(ti)/ found in Cuneiform Luwian (Sasseville 2021a:21f.).
