1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

Attested in only partly syllabic spelling, the phonological interpretation of this word is nevertheless reasonably certain due to its clear morphological structure, cf. the discussion of the stem below.

1.1.4Meaning

The general meaning of this word is clear, as it belongs to the family around HLuw. /hudarl(i)-/ ‘servant’ and denotes a hierarchically lower person in their relation to a higher-ranking one (cf. Hawkins 2000a:126). This can be observed in the context of KIRŞEHİR, §1: á-sa5-za-a-wa/i DOMINUS-[ni-i] á-mi-i tu-wa/i-ti-ia SERVUS-la/i-ti-sa-wa/i tu-wa/i-sà [I]mu-wa/i-ta-li-i-sá (LOQUI)ha+ra/i-i-ti, approx. /assazza=wa nanni ammi Tuwattiya hudarlattis=wa tuwis Muwatallis haditti/, translating as ‘Say to my master Tuwatti: your subordinate (?) Muwatalli proclaims: …’ (cf. Akdoğan & Hawkins 2010a:4f.). However, the exact denotation is difficult to pin down, because the word is also used to indicate a person’s relationship to a deity (usually the realm of the noun /hudarl(i)-/ ‘servant’, see the attestation in KÜRTÜL, §1), and in another inscription for the relationship of a population(?) with its king (KARKAMIŠ A6, §7).

1.1.5Stem

The word is a common gender noun subject to i-mutation, as becomes clear from the attested forms. It is a derivation in /-aT(i)-/ from the noun HLuw. /hudarl(i)-/ ‘servant’ (see e.g. Yakubovich 2015b:6.2).
