1.1.1Transmission

This lexeme is found in the inscription of the inscribed pillar of Xanthos, dated contextually to shortly after the ascension of Artaxerxes II in 405-404 BCE and stylistically to around 400 BCE (Borchhardt & Eichner 1997-1999a:19f.). It is also attested as a personal name Maxa (TL 78).

1.1.2Forms

acc. sg. (?) maxã TL 44a.16 (Xanthos)

Formally, it could be interpreted as a 1sg. pret. act. form of ma-(ti) (thus Torp 1901b:12, skeptical Neumann 2007a:192), but a nominal interpretation appears more likely in view of the personal name Maxa (TL 78) and the form maxitẽni.

1.1.3Graphic Features

The separation into m(e)=axã suggested by Gehrisch 2018a:61 is not possible, since me is a sentence introductory particle and the previous se=we makes it clear that the new clause begins with se=we, and that maxã constitutes a unitary word.

[D.S.]

1.1.4Meaning

The fragmentary context does not allow for any reliable semantic assignment.
