1.1.3Meaning

From an etymological perspective with Hitt. kuššaniye/a-(mi) ‘to hire, rent’, Neumann 1979a:27 (and Neumann 2007a:299) suggests the meaning ‘to rent’ for Lyc. qehñni-(ti), which is also supported by the context. Its direct object is xali ‘yard, enclosure’ and refers to the court in which the grave is found. This semantic assignment is followed by Sasseville 2021a:160, who brings further evidence from the phonological perspective. It is also followed by Christiansen 2012a:146, Schürr & Dönmez 2015a:143 and Gehrisch 2018a:180, although the meaning ‘to buy’ is not quite adequate. Contra Eichner 2005a:20 n. 95 “to carve”.

1.2 Lydian

qašãni-(t)

‘to rent’

1.2.1Transmission

This lexeme is found in a metrical inscription that has not been dated accurately, although Euler & Sasseville 2019a:129 provisionally suggest an early date (i.e. 6th c. BCE) because of the use of the archaic letter y.

1pl. pres. or pret.(?) act. išqašãnwν LW 13.3 (Sardis)

It is unclear whether the ending -wν is used only for the present tense or for both present and preterit. The context permits either interpretation.

1.2.3Meaning

Gusmani 1960a:289f. suggests the meaning ‘we own (?)’ for Lyd. išqašanwν (followed by Gérard 2005a:128), because the direct object is qira- ‘property’, but admits that it is very uncertain. Sasseville 2021a:166f. equates Lydian qasãni-(t) with Hitt. kuššaniye/a-(mi) ‘to hire, employ’ and Lyc. A qehñni-(ti) ‘to rent’, which is a phonological and morphological match. The semantics obtained by the comparative evidence are contextually supported, since a property (qiraad) can be rented. However, it is not certain whether the speakers rent the property for themselves or are renting it out to someone else, which could be implied in the preverb iš-. Gusmani 1960a:289f. (and Gusmani 1964a:136) takes išqašanwν as a derivative of Lyd. qaša-.

2. Reconstruction

2.1Reconstruction ‘to hire, rent’

If we take all three denominative verbs, i.e. Hitt. kuššaniye/a-(mi)‘to hire, rent’, Lyc. qehñni-(ti) ‘to rent’ and Lyd. qašãni-(ti)‘id.’, as cognates, a Proto-Anatolian verb *kEh3s-En-i̯é/ó- can be reconstructed (Sasseville 2021a:160, 174 and cf. HEG I-K:671, HED K:392, EDHIL:498f.).
