1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

Because the word is attested only in a partly destroyed context in MARAŞ 8, §2, any phonological interpretation is to be taken with caution. However, the use of the logographic determinative FLAMMAE (sign *477) connects the verb to the general semantic field of destruction by fire in HLuw., and the choice of 〈la/i/u〉 for the first syllabic sign strongly suggests identifying the slightly better attested verb /luslussa-/ ‘to sacrifice (by burning)’ (see under lemma) as a cognate, cf. Hawkins 2000a:253f.

1.1.4Meaning

The semantic interpretation ‘to burn’ is suggested by Hawkins 2000a:253f. based on cumulative evidence from spelling, etymology, and context. The last-mentioned point is perhaps the weakest, because the context appears to be only partially preserved in MARAŞ 8, §2: *a-wa/i-tá ku-ma-na mi-˹ia?-ti?˺-i FLUMEN.REGIO-ia-ti-i DOMUS-na-x[…?] ARHA (FLAMMAE)la/i/u-x(-x?), possibly /a=wa=tta kuman ammiyadi habadayadi parna-x[…?] ahha lu-x/, which may translate as ‘When from my river-land the houses burned down’ vel sim. The size of the lacuna is not clear, because the inscription partially runs across the figure of the ruler speaking, and it does not become evident from the surface of the stone if the face of the figure was also written across or not. If it was left undisturbed, the lacuna is negligible to non-existent and the verb is most likely intransitive, but if there were signs there after all, their number is very difficult to gauge, and the verb may require a different interpretation.

1.1.5Stem

Because the only attestation for this verb in MARAŞ 8, §2 is partially broken, it is not possible to assess the stem formation with any certainty. Whether it is a root verb or enlarged by a thematic vowel or other cannot be stated, until further textual evidence has surfaced. However, it is possible, albeit by no means certain, that the present lexeme represents the simplex that served as a base for the reduplicated verb /luslusa-(i)/ ‘to sacrifice (by burning)’.
