qelẽnẽti

‘(unknown)’

1.1.1Transmission

This lexeme is found once in the poetical inscription engraved on the lion sarcophagus of Antiphellos dated on stylistic grounds to the beginning of the 4th century BCE (Zahle 1979a:318, Mühlbauer 2007a:91).

1.1.2Forms

unknown qelẽnẽti TL 55.8 (Antiphellos)

The grammatical assignment of the word qelẽnẽti is disputed. Melchert (DLL:126) analyzes it tentatively as an adjective in - ̃t(i)-, i.e. qelẽnẽt(i)-. In this case, it would agree with xrbbla<t>i and tunewñ{:}ni. Shevoroshkin 2002c:407 take as it as a verb in the 3rd plural present (thus already Meriggi 1938a:148 n. 3). However, there is otherwise no evidence for a verbal suffix -ẽne-, which makes the verbal interpretation less likely. Schürr 2005a:149 separates the word in two, i.e. qelẽ and ẽti, treating the n inbetween as a hiatus filler, which is not persuasive and unmotivated.

1.1.3Meaning

No convincing semantic and contextual interpretation has been suggested; cf. Neumann 2007a:300 with further literature. However, it is possibly related to qala- c. ‘precinct’ and qele(/i)- ‘?’.
