‘to take care (?)’1.1.1Transmission
This lexeme is found twice in two burial inscriptions found in Sardis. LW 3 can be dated to the early Hellenistic period, whereas LW 18 can be assigned only a more approximate date (5th or 4th century BCE).

1.1.3Meaning
The plausible interpretation of qišred as ‘takes care’ is proposed in Carruba 1959a:28 and affirmed in Gusmani 1964a:187. A person who takes care of the tomb in the future is enjoined to show respect toward it (cf. šilawa-). In LW 18 qišredν appears to be used in the manner of Lat. curavi, with reference to the act of supervising the construction of a burial. It is difficult to discern the rationale behind the translation ‘to spare’, adopted in Gérard 2005a:99 n. 643.

1.1.4Stem
A plausible reconstruction of the stem as a denominative in -e-(d) from the stem *qišr- is offered in Melchert 1994b:184; cf. Sasseville 2021a:211. The stress of the derived verb falls on the suffix. The element *qišr- is also likely to be present in qištori-.
