3sg. pret. ind. act. plade TL 26.10 (Tlos)

1.1.3Graphic Features

The sequence the present lexeme occurs in, pladetijas, has been analyzed as one word by a number of scholars (DLL:50, Neumann 2007a:276, Gehrisch 2018a:35). However, it is more likely that we are dealing with a verbal form plade (thus Schürr 2018b:165 n. 16) followed by the direct object tijas ‘penalties’ (see under Meaning). The existence of a verb pla- can be demonstrated by way of the personal name esedeplẽme/i-, which consists of the participial form plẽme/i- of a putative verb ple- or pla- (with vowel harmony), preceded by two preverbs, i.e. ese and de (cf. Neumann 2007a:77). Nevertheless, since the end of line 9, which marks the beginning of the sentence, is not preserved, any decision regarding segmentation must be considered tentative.

1.1.4Meaning

The preserved part of the sentence in which plade is found runs as follows:

plade tijas : prz<z>is : sej=epris (TL 26.10) ‘He pla-ed the first and the last penalties.’

The beginning of the sentence with the sentential initial particle chain is very likely lost in the lacuna of the previous line. The verb is found within a passage listing sacrificial instructions as well as possibly some curse formulas. The meaning of pla-(di) depends on the understanding of the context, which is hindered by its fragmentary state.
