wastνun-

1.1.1Transmission

This noun occurs once in a burial inscription and once in a text belonging to the sphere of public law. Both texts are from Sardis and can be loosely dated to 5th - 4th century BCE.

acc. pl. wastνun(=k) LW 22.7 (Sardis)
poss. adj. nom. sg. c. wastνunliš LW 10.13 (Sardis)

1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

The gender of the noun cannot be determined based on the available forms, but if it is the common gender, then the stem was probably wastνun(i)-. For the possible syncope of the stem-final vowel in nom.sg. before =k, cf. datros(i)-. The accent was probably on the initial syllable, hence the preservation of the root vowel (cf. wsta-).

[I.Y.]

1.1.4Meaning

As long as one accepts that datros(i)- refers to a type of payment or transaction involving property, the hypothesis that wastνun- belongs to the same semantic field imposes itself in view of the juxtaposition of wastνun=k and datros=k in LW 22.7. In LW 10.13, one finds the possessive construction wastνunliš qašaas, where qaša- refers to a type of property, or something similar. Cf. further the discussion of the meaning of wsta-.

According to Meriggi 1935a:97 wastνun- has the meaning ‘honesty’ or ‘honest guarantee’, which effectively disconnected wastνun- from its base wsta-. The meaning ‘heritage’ is advocated in Gusmani 1964a largely on the basis of how of wsta- is interpreted in the same dictionary. According to Carruba 1969a:72, n.33, wastνun- has no plausible interpretation.

[I.Y.]

1.1.5Stem

wastνun- appears to have been derived from wsta- with the help of the suffix -νun-, which does not seem to be attested elsewhere in Lydian. Nevertheless, the synchronic connection between wastνun- and its base is hardly to be doubted. As noted in Schürr 1997a:210, the juxtaposition of wastνun=k and datros=k in LW 22.7 must be treated in the context of the collocation LW 13.2-3 ištaminliš wstaas datrosiš=k šarys.

[I.Y.]

For the base of the derivative see Lyd. wsta-.
