1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

Despite two fully syllabic renditions, the phonological interpretation of this lexeme is somewhat uncertain for lack of further information regarding the quality of the dental, here represented with the cover symbol /T/. The endings of both attested case forms are well-known from many other words and can therefore be taken as certain.

1.1.4Meaning ‘greed(?), avarice(?), rapacity(?)’

The precise meaning of the present lexeme has so far remained in the dark, not least ue to its unclear morphology (Hawkins 2000a:547, 549). It is proposed here that it belongs to the word family around the adjective /su-/ ‘complete, full’. In the contexts /suTir(i)-/ appears in, it is linked with the noun /harratta-/ ‘offence’ by the connector /=ha/ ‘and’ and evidently denotes a negative condition or habit of the addressee that, in ASSUR letter e, appears to result in the death of a group of children. It is therefore suggested that the meaning of /suTir(i)-/ may be ‘greed(?), avarice(?), rapacity(?) (vel sim.)’ in the sense of an overly strong desire for fullness or completeness.
