1.1.4Meaning

The word arm̃paimedi can be taken as a participial form of a non-attested denominative *arm̃pa(i)-(di) or as a possessive derivation in -aime/i- (DLL:112). The word modified by arm̃paimedi is broken ([ … ] TL 44d.21). However, the rest of the sentence is clear: [ … ]lẽ tbisu tustti arm̃paimedi qã[ … ] ‘he sets up twice the … with a … furnished with (a) pillar(s).’ The verb tustti, a formation in -s-(ti) derived from the verb tuwe-(ti) ‘to set up, to erect’, makes it clear that the sentence refers to the erection of a monument. In TL 55.7, the form rm̃paimi is found in a more obscure sentence. It could agree with the word uteñneri of unknown meaning or with the word qelei ‘precinct’. If the latter is correct, rm̃paimi would modify a structure where pillars or columns can be expected. Further contextual support can be drawn from the fact that the inscription TL 55 concerns the construction of a sacred precinct (cf. TL 55.2 and see under lemma qla-(ti) ‘to make a precinct’).For a survey of the outdated literature see Neumann 2007a:20.
