1.1.2Forms

3pl. pres. act. hm̃mẽti N 324.4 (Xanthos), N 324.10 (Xanthos)
  hṃ̃mẽti N 325.12 (Xanthos)
part. nom./acc. pl. hm͂mãta TL 44b.41 (Xanthos)

For the restoration of the line 41 in TL 44b, see Schürr & Dönmez 2015a. The word was previously [...]ahm͂mãta, which can now be reinterpreted as mãna hm͂mãta thanks to the joining of the fragment. Differently, Schürr & Dönmez 2015a:142 take both words together and see a compound.

1.1.3Meaning

Laroche 1979c:64 and Bousquet 1992a:184 suggest the meaning ‘to install’ for hm̃mẽti and compares m̃ma(i)-(di) ‘to build, to install’. However, the two verbs cannot be equated etymologically with one another. In hm̃mẽti, the root is hm̃m- and there is no sound change, where initial h- is lost (thus also DLL:24). A connection with Hitt. šamnā(i)-(mi) ‘to create’ is also suggested by Laroche (ibid.), which is possible but tentative. Melchert (DLL:24) suggests a compound with a preverb hm̃m-, which would be otherwise unattested. The meaning of the verb remains uncertain especially considering the fragmentary state of the passages. The only clue provided by the context in N 324 (and probably in N 325) is that the verb is found twice within the same inscription followed by the word xahadi ‘with a hearth’.

In the newly restored passage, it modifies the noun mãna (see under lemma).

1.1.4Stem

The verbal form hm̃mẽti could reflect a deradical verb in -e-(ti) or a denominative in -e-(di) derived from a non-attested base *hm̃me- c. Both options must be left open until further evidence.
