1.1.4Meaning

The meaning of this verb, along with the related adjective /tannatta/i-/, was long somewhat unclear,Meriggi (HHG:118) suggested “‘(um)mauern’ oder ähnlich”., until both were connected to their CLuw. and Hittite cognates dannatta/i- ‘empty’ and dannattaḫḫ- ‘to devastate’ by Laroche 1950a:51. Although ignored for some time,And evidently abandoned by Laroche himself, see the entry for sign *245 in Laroche 1960c:130f. his hypothesis found support from Nowicki 1981a:255f., Hawkins & Morpurgo Davies 1986a:74f., and Melchert 1988a:32f. The etymological connection is borne out by the contexts of attestation, e.g. in KARKAMIŠ A11b+c, §12: a-wa/i *a-pa-ia REGIO-ni-ia (“VACUUS”)ta-na-tá-ha, approx. /a=wa abaya wattaniya tannattahha/, meaning ‘And I devastated those areas’ (cf. Hawkins 2000a:103).
