1.1.3.13.1 Phonological Interpretation

The phonological interpretation of this lexeme is provisional, since its only attestation is spelt partly logographically. The sign *30, not yet fixed with a semantic interpretation, can also be found with /habadatt(i)-/ ‘(deified) valley’, where it covers the /haba°/ part of the word, as identified by Goedegebuure forthcoming. On this basis, she suggests the reading /hap(pa)rinu(wa)-/ for the present lexeme, connecting it to Hittite ḫāppar- ‘trade, price’ (cf. HEG A-Ḫ:161f. and EDHIL:295) and its family of words.

1.1.4Meaning

Due to the use of the sign *30 to represent part of the word, the meaning of this lexeme remained in the dark for some time, cf. Laroche 1960c:22 and later Hawkins & Morpurgo Davies 1986a:73, until it was elucidated by Goedegebuure forthcoming, who assigned the meaning ‘to deliver’ on the basis of its cognate link with Hittite ḫap(pa)riye/a-(mi) ‘to sell, trade, deliver’. KARKAMIŠ A12, §13 runs: *a-wa/i-tú-wa/i-na PRAE-na “*30”-ri+i-nu-wa/i-ha, approx. /a=wa=du=an parran hap(pa)rinuwahha/, meaning ‘(I carried to him a blood-offering, I carried to him a weapon and a h. as a gift,) and I delivered it before him’ (Goedegebuure forthcoming, cf. also Hawkins 2000a:114 and Yakubovich 2019a:547).

1.1.5Stem

Formed with the suffix /-nu(wa)-(i)/, this verb appears to be built from a verbal (?) stem */happari-(ti)/ (Goedegebuure forthcoming), which is unattested in HLuw., but is surely related to the same root used in /suhhappanant(i)-/ ‘rich’ and Hittite ḫāppar- ‘trade, price’ (cf. HEG A-Ḫ:161f. and EDHIL:295). If the base is nominal, the function of the suffix is factitive rather than causative, cf. Sasseville 2021a:462-464.
