1.1.2Forms

2sg. impv. act. /liliya/ (SA4)li-li-ya TELL AHMAR 5, §12a (Tell Ahmar)

This verb is recognised with Hawkins 2006a:27f. against earlier Hawkins 2000a:232, who parsed the clause differently by taking the string of signs to read a unified 〈|(SA4)li-li-ia-wa/i-na-’〉 instead of 〈|(SA4)li-li-ia *a-wa/i-na〉 with initial-a-final, which is a common feature in the text. Also, word dividers are used frequently but not entirely reliably in the text, rendering the new interpretation more compelling, cf. the discussions below.

1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

The phonological interpretation of this word is assured. Not only is it attested in fully syllabic spelling, but it also has likely cognates in CLuw. lila-(ti) and lilā(i)-(di), both meaning ‘to pacify, soothe’, and lila- c. ‘pacification, conciliation’ vel sim. (cf. DCL:s.v. and Sasseville 2021a:27f.).

The logogram (sign *402, also read ) can otherwise be found with words like HLuw. /sann(a)i-(di)/ ‘to cover, hide’ and HLuw. /kwananalla-/ ‘carver’.

1.1.4Meaning

The meaning of this word has undergone reassessment due to the etymological link with CLuw. lila-(ti) and lilā(i)-(di) ‘to pacify, soothe’. Earlier, Hawkins 2006a:27f. (followed by Intilia 2012a:178) had suggested the verb to mean ‘to hasten’ based on the possible Hitt. cognate liliwant-.In the editio princeps, the word was parsed wrongly and Hawkins 1996-1997a:114 assigned no meaning. However, the connection with the CLuw. cognates adduced here suggests otherwise, and the logographic determinative does not aid in the interpretation. The context of attestation fits both suggestions, but preference is given here to the etymologically supported ‘to pacify (?)’. TELL AHMAR 5, §12a reads: SUPER+ra/i-a-wa/i-ta (SA4)li-li-ia, approx. /sarra=wa=an=tta liliya/, meaning ‘(Afterwards this god rose in favour behind me, and his prophet proclaimed to me:) “Soothe it over (or: from above?)! (Raise it as an embodiment!”)’ (cf. Hawkins 2000a:232, Hawkins 2006a:27f.), after which the author describes himself following these orders.

1.1.5Stem

The attested form of this verb does not permit to attribute it securely to one stem class. Rather, the stem classes /-i(ya)-(di)/ and /-iya-(i)/ are equally likely based on the shape of them (see Sasseville 2021a:319-321, 404-406), yet the latter seems more likely since it is home to several other reduplicated verbs.
