1.1.3.13.1 Phonological Interpretation

The phonological interpretation of this word is provisional. For a long time, it was seen as a possible cognate of the word family around Hittite ḫuwapp-/ḫupp- ‘to mistreat’, see Oettinger 1979a:502 incl. n. 16 with reference to Neumann, followed by Hawkins 2000a:550. More recently, Sasseville 2021a:465 has interpreted the spelling as /hwibassanu(wa)-/, connecting it to the fragmentarily attested CLuw. ḫuipa-(ti), which denotes something cruel; this link appears to be more straightforward and is therefore favoured here. Still, the two families in Hittite and Luwian are probably etymologically related; see under lemma head.

1.1.4Meaning

The meaning is suggested by Hawkins 2000a:536 on the basis of the putative connection with Hittite ḫuwapp-/ḫupp- ‘to mistreat’ (Neumann apud Oettinger 1979a:502 n. 16). Even if the link is not as close as envisaged at the time, the assigned meaning is likely correct at a more general level. Sasseville 2021a:465 proposes a more drastic ‘to let die’ vel sim., but the context at ASSUR letter f+g, §13 does not force this interpretation: ni-pa-wa/i-mu (“SIGILLUM”)hwa/i-pa-sa-nu, approx. /niba=wa=mu hwappassanu/, translating as ‘(If you’re in good health/life, you shall in no way push us out), nor cause harm (?) to me!’ (cf. Hawkins 2000a:536). Future textual finds may facilitate a more precise semantic interpretation.

1.1.5Stem

This verb is clearly a stem in /-nu(wa)-/, evidently deriving from an otherwise unattested stem in /-ssa-(i)/. The semantic content of the formation with /-nu(wa)-/ is therefore likely causative, see Sasseville 2021a:462-465. The word may ultimately go back to the verb attested in CLuw. ḫuipa-(ti) (see also Sasseville 2021a:25).
