1.1.4Meaning
Since Watkins 1997a:32, the semantic interpretation is based on the recognition of the meanings of lāpana- as ‘salt-lick’ and lapanalla/i- as ‘salt-lick warden’. The contexts in the Ulmi-Teššub treaty and the Bronze Tablet clearly refer to the rights of exploiting the salt-lick, which should remain with the vassal. For references to earlier views based on alleged meaning of lāpana- c. ‘summer pasture’, see under lemma.

1.1.5Stem
The nom./acc. sg. n. lapanaliyanza (with deficient spelling of geminate -ll-) belongs to a substantivized adjective in -i(ya)- deriving from lapanalla/i- ‘(sbst.) salt-lick warden’ (as analyzed under Forms, which see for references).Outdated is Carruba 1980b:362 assuming a suffix -ali-.
