nom. sg. c. la-pa!-na-al-li-iš KBo 29.38 obv. 6’ (CTH 769, MS?)

1.1.3Graphic Features

Checked against the photographs in the Mainzer Fotoarchiv. – Starke 1985b:369 reads la-ap-na-al-li-iš (with AB instead of PA), probably influenced by the handcopy. Although the photograph shows the horizontals with slight traces of broken horizontals speaking for AB, it is untypical for AB that both horizontals extend beyond the final vertical as they do in PA. Either reading would demand an exclamation mark, so that the expected reading is given preference here.

1.1.4Meaning

Attested in fragmentary context, the word receives its semantic interpretation from the attestations of lapanalla/i- in Hittite transmission (cf. CLL:125, HED L:61, Yakubovich 2017d:s.v.).

1.2.4Meaning

The transparent stem formation permits an analysis as a substantivized relational adjective (suffix -alla/i-) of the base lāpana- c. ‘salt-lick’. Supported by the context at IBoT 2.131 rev. 14-19, which deals with salt deliveries, Watkins 1997a:31f. translates the word as ‘saltlick warden’, which is superior to the translation as ‘herdsman (on summer pasture)’ now outdated (e.g. Starke 1990a:172, 231; for further references, see under lāpana-.
