1.1 Lydian

tarplati-

‘to perform substitution (?)’

1.1.1Transmission

This lexeme is attested in a metrical inscription that seems to be of a dedicatory nature for the goddess Malis and that has not been dated accurately.

[D.S.]

1.1.2Forms

3sg. pret. act. tarplatil LW 15.5 (Sardis)

An infinitive is also possible, but less likely.

[D.S.]

1.1.3Meaning

The meaning ‘to acquire’ or ‘to confer ownership’ is now outdated (see tarpla-) (contra Brandenstein 1931b:38, Meriggi 1935a:105, Gusmani 1964a:209). Although it was rightly recognized as a derivative of tarpla-, the meaning should now be sought in the sphere of “replacement” or “substitution”, i.e. tarplati- ‘to perform substitution (?)’; see under lemma. Unfortunately, the fragmentary context hinders a solid contextual analysis for now.

[D.S.]

1.1.4Stem

The verbal stem could be either -i-(t) or -i-(d); see Sasseville 2021a:162f. and 241f.

[D.S.]

For the lemma head see Lyd. *tarp-.
