‘to act as a representative (?)’

1.1.1Transmission

This lexeme is attested in the inscription of the inscribed pillar of Xanthos, dated contextually to shortly after the ascension of Artaxerxes II in 405-404 BCE and stylistically to around 400 BCE (Borchhardt & Eichner 1997-1999a:19f.).

1.1.3Meaning

The passage in which trppalau is found is obscure. However, based on the direct object xerigazn͂ ‘of Gergis’ (and perhaps epeqzz[.]), the verb must be transitive. It is clearly a denominative to the noun trppala- c. ‘substitute, representative (?)’ occurring within the same context (DLL:131, Sasseville 2021a:53). Therefore, the morphematic meaning of the denominative verb would be ‘to perform one’s function as a substitute/representative upon X (see Sasseville 2021a:18f.). In a different vein, Shevoroshkin 1969a:255 suggests the meaning ‘to replace, renew’, which is possible but not provable until we understand what the direct object is; contra Shevoroshkin 2002a:219 “to collect”.

1.1.4Stem

The denominative verb trppala- is probably a factitive in -a-(ti) (Sasseville 2021a:53), although a denominative in -a(i)-(di) cannot yet be excluded.
