1.1.4Meaning
The lexeme follows GIŠlūdanza of unknown meaning. Laroche (DLL:93) and Melchert (CLL:214, DCL:s.v.) regard the word as obscure. Recently, on account of the -i(ya)- suffix, Sasseville 2021a:93 has analyzed it as an adjective and tentatively assigned it to tarpa- c., translated here as ‘opposition, rivalry’. The resulting semantic interpretation as ‘related to opposition, rivalry’ is compatible with the fragmentary context, which features a form tarpātar (ibid. 4’ and 5’), usually analyzed as 3sg. pres. med. of tarpā(i)-(di) ‘to tread, walk (on)’; cf. Sasseville 2023bfor a different semantic approach.
