1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

The phonological interpretation suggested for this word can be viewed as certain, because the morphological structure of the form is transparent; cf. the discussion of the stem below. It belongs to the word family around the 2pl. pronoun /unza-/ ‘you (pl.)’ and originally constitutes the abl./instr. in its paradigm. The /n/ is, as always, omitted in spelling before a consonant (cf. e.g. Melchert 2003b:182), but the use of /z/ instead of the etymologically expected /s/ indirectly attests to its presence (cf. Melchert 1994a:241, Carruba 2002b:105). The ending /-adi/, well-known from many other abl./instr. forms, is attested in its rhotacised variant in ASSUR letter a, §4 and §9, a common feature of the later texts in HLuw., see Morpurgo Davies 1982-1983a:246-250.

1.1.4Meaning

The word was correctly identified as belonging to the family around the 2pl. pronoun /unza-/ ‘you (pl.)’ already by Meriggi (HHG:137), despite the erroneous readings used for some signs at that time. The precise meaning remained out of scholars’ grasp considerably longer, however, not least because the word has so far only been found attested in one of the ASSUR letters, a set of texts notoriously difficult to understand due to their different style compared with most other texts in the HLuw. corpus. While Oshiro 2000a:191-193 notes correctly that /unzadi/ remains unaccompanied by a noun in either of its contexts of attestation and should therefore be regarded as independent, the leap to an adverbial analysis was accomplished only later by Yakubovich 2015b:6.4, based on the comparison with /zadi/ ‘here’. ASSUR letter a, §4 reads: u-nu-ha-wa/i-tu-u-ta u-za-ri+i ARHA-a pa+ra/i-ra+a-ha, approx. /unun=ha=wa=du=tta unzadi ahha parirahha/, translating as ‘And now, I have become fully irrelevant at your place’ (cf. Hawkins 2000a:534).

1.1.5Stem

Originally an abl./instr. of the 2pl. pronoun /unza-/ ‘you (pl.)’ (thus already HHG:137, followed by Hawkins 2000a:542, Oshiro 2000a:192 and others), the present word underwent lexicalisation and is used adverbially in the HLuw. corpus (Yakubovich 2015b:6.4); cf. also the analogous form of the 2sg., /tuwadi/ ‘at your (sg.) place’.
