1.1.1Transmission
This lexeme is attested in various text genres such as treaties (CTH 76, 106, 122), letters (CTH 176), rituals (CTH 413, 435), instructions (CTH 264), and votive texts (CTH 590). So far, the lexeme seems to be only attested in New Hittite compositions or copies.

Both forms taparriyai are treated here as 2nd singular imperative in accordance with the paradigm of the class in -ā(i)-(mi), and not as 3rd singular present (thus also Helck 1963a:90 for KUB 21.38, contra HEG T, D:117).
In the literature, one finds two different types of stem formation, i.e. tapariye/a-(mi) and tapariyā(i)-(mi) (Melchert 2005a:450), although Kloekhorst (EDHIL:830) rightly notices that all forms attributed to a stem in -iye/a-(mi) could belong to the formation in -ā(i)-(mi) instead. Therefore, for the sake of economy, only a stem in -iy-ā(i)-(mi) is attributed to the lexeme here, although a Luwian stem in -i-(ti) (= Hitt. -iye/a-(mi)) must have existed, at least in the pre-history of the language.

1.1.4Meaning
The meaning and usage of tapariyā(i)-(mi) differs slightly from the one of tapar-(ti) ‘to guide, rule’ (Sasseville 2021a:272f.). In general, the verb is often used ditransitively, taking someone or something as a direct object and a goal as an indirect object, thus meaning ‘to appoint, designate’ or in Germ. ‘bestimmen’ (Kronasser 1962c:489, Otten 1988a:49, 73, HEG T, D:117). There is possibly one intransitive example in KUB 13.4 iv 9, depending on whether the Hittite enclitic pronoun =šmaš ‘to you (pl.)’ is interpreted as accusative or dative, although the latter is preferred here, i.e. ‘to decide/designate for you’.

1.1.5Stem
The denominative verb tapariyā(i)-(mi) is derived from the abstract noun tapariya- c. ‘command’ (Sasseville 2020c:281, Sasseville 2021a:271), i.e. ‘to exert a command’ → ‘to appoint’; contra Kronasser 1962c:489 “secondary deradical -iye/a-”.

1.1.6Origin
The lexeme tabariyā(i)-(mi) has been considered a Luwianism by Melchert 2005a:450. It is, however, questionable whether the denominative in -ā(i)-(mi) comes from a Luwian formation in -ā(i)-(di) (or from the factitive /tabariya-(ti)/ attested so far only in HLuw.), or if it is instead an inner-Hittite creation based on the borrowed Luwian action noun tapariya- c. (implicitly Sasseville 2021a:271-273).
